Junior Chess

Bristol has a thriving junior chess scene, with plenty of opportunities for young players to learn, compete, and improve their skills. Whether your child is just starting out or already a strong player, there are clubs, tournaments, and coaching programs available to support their development.

Junior Chess Clubs

Several chess clubs across Bristol offer dedicated junior sessions where children can learn and play in a friendly environment. Some of the best clubs for juniors include:

  • Bristol & Clifton Chess Club – A club with many young players and two dedicated junior teams in the Bristol League.

  • Downend & Fishponds Chess Club – A welcoming club for juniors of all abilities, with winners of multiple Bristol age groups to learn and progress from.

  • Portishead Chess Club – Hosts regular junior sessions and runs junior tournaments.

  • South Bristol Chess Club – Has junior coaching sessions before its regular club evenings.

  • Bath Chess Club – Although we don’t have a dedicated junior section, we have a good number of children of school age, who are a valued part of our club.

  • North Bristol Chess Club – We have a thriving group of junior players at the club. Junior players are always welcome.

Libraries

Many libraries in Bristol host chess clubs, mainly aimed at children, teens and families. These are free and operate on a drop-in basis, no need to book in advance.. (These have not been verified so best to check with the library before going).

  • Horfield Library – Hosts community activities, including chess sessions for local players.

  • Bishopsworth Library – Offers family-friendly events, with chess among the activities. Sat 3pm.

  • Hillfields Library – Runs a fortnightly chess club for ages 8–17 on Tuesdays at 3.30

  • Bristol Central Library – While primarily a public library, it occasionally supports chess-related events and activities.

  • Bedminster Library – Launching an 8-week chess club for children and teens (ages 8–17) starting June 2025.

  • Wick Road Library – Hosts a Family Chess Club on Fridays (3:30–4:30pm, term-time only).

  • Redland Library – Runs a weekly Saturday chess club (11:30am) for children aged 5–17 and their families.

Junior Tournaments

Bristol hosts various junior chess tournaments throughout the year, giving young players the chance to test their skills against their peers. Popular events include:

  • Portishead Junior Rapidplay – A one day competition held every six months for juniors of all ages and abilities.

  • UK Chess Challenge – A national competition with four stages to find the best young players in the UK.

  • EJCOA – A two stage national junior competition with local heats qualifying to FIDE rated games in the final. Includes an Under 20 section.

  • Bristol Championships – The top Under 18 takes the trophy for Bristol Junior Champion.

Coaching & Training

For those looking to improve their game, coaching is available from experienced chess tutors. Many clubs offer group lessons, and private coaching is also an option.

  • Beginner coaching – Learning the rules, basic tactics, and opening principles.

  • Intermediate coaching – Strategy, endgames, and tournament preparation.

  • Advanced coaching – Deep analysis, advanced tactics, and psychological preparation for competitions.
